Beauties of America 40s – Yvette Koehler
Who would you most like to meet and why? I was born and raised in San Antonio so I know that community, generosity and hospitality are what make this town so unique. The San Antonio Spurs can undeniably bring San Antonians together because of their constant sportsmen-like behavior, upstanding reputations and passion for the basketball. Because of that, I would like to meet Tim Duncan. I’d like to know if he understands what he means to the people of our city, particularly my mother who is a #1 Spurs fan!
What do you like to do for fun? Anytime I can spend laughing and relaxing with family and dear friends is a fun time! Firing up the grill, making a pitcher of margaritas and sitting on the back patio with those that I care about the most is enough to recharge me after the roughest of days. When I’m not entertaining family and friends, I also enjoy shopping and crafting (creating vinyl stickers and iron-on designs).
What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Be kind to EVERYONE. You never know what people are going through. Your kindness could be the one thing that turns that person’s mood, day or even life around. You may also be surprised by the friendships your kindness may initiate.
What is the funniest thing that’s ever happened to you? When I was 21, I worked with a handsome guy who got to hear all about the girl’s night outs and other dates I’ve been on, particularly one with a Doctor who liked to take me to nice restaurants. It took us a while but we finally decided to go on our first date. When we got to the restaurant, he announces “Remember when you order, I’m not a Doctor!” That could have been the queue for me to run for my life but his honesty (and penchant for watching his money) had me intrigued. I ended up marrying that handsome co-worker and twenty-one years later we still laugh about our first date!
What’s your favorite type of music? I have a very eclectic taste in music. I’ll listen to pop, latin, rap, country and alternative mainly but enjoy anything with a good beat to keep me going! I feed off the music I listen to so sometimes I enjoy some jazz, easy listening or Texas Country to decompress at the end of a long day too!
What is the best book you’ve ever read? I’m usually running 100 miles an hour so when I stop I’m usually sleepy which doesn’t allow me much time to read. I think the last book I finished was one from the Twilight series because my daughter and I liked to see the movies on opening night. It wasn’t the best book I could have read but I finished it!
What charitable organization do you enjoy volunteering for or would want to volunteer for? I enjoy working with those with special needs, particularly those with Down Syndrome. One of my first jobs was working at an afterschool program sponsored by the ARC of San Antonio. That was one of the most rewarding jobs I’ve had and I’ve kept that passion for helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
If there was a reality show about your life what would the title be? Koehler Cam – A day with the Koehler’s is never dull. There are usually some antics that will ensue when you get us together. Whether it’s the “Koehler Luck” that takes over, my husband making some silly joke or apparently us just conversing – there is plenty of material for our show to have many seasons. I didn’t even have to come up with the name; my sister-in-law did it for us. Whenever she is around us she’ll usually shout, “Where’s the Koehler Cam”?!
What accomplishment in your life are you most proud of? I’m always most proud when someone tells me how respectful, thoughtful and driven our daughter, Karsen, is. Knowing we have raised a beautiful (on the inside) young lady means we have been good role models which also speak for the parenting that we modeled from our parents.
Who or what motivates you and why? My family motivates me. They are my biggest supporters and critics when it counts. I come from a family that has worked very hard to get what they have and to give me the tools I need to be successful. That strength, drive and constant belief in me motivates me every single day.
What’s your favorite midnight snack? I love sleep more than I love snacks so you won’t find me late-night snacking.
What do you do when you are bored? When I get bored, I usually find something that needs cleaning or organizing. I’m not a fan of cleaning but when there is nothing else to do, I’ll find motivation in knowing how excited a clean closet or pantry will make me!
What is ‘beauty’ to you? Being beautiful is being confident and kind. When you believe in yourself that beauty shines through. When you are kind, that beauty is shared with others.
